There are few people in Canadian history who have had quite the impact as this man has. He didn't alter history drastically, and Canada would probably actually be rather similar without him. However, John Matheson is an important Canadian figure in that he is responsible for the things that make us Canadian today. In his younger years, John served as a soldier in the Second Great War, but when he returned, he went into politics.
He became a very prominent member of our Liberal government. Before this point, Canada had never had an official flag. There was a flag that was considered the unofficial flag, but many people had issues with it, saying it wasn't "Canadian" enough. John Matheson along with his colleague Dr. George Stanley of Mount Allison University designed the maple leaf flag that we have today. John Matheson also was the leading politician who leaded Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson to form the Order of Canada, one of the highest honours the Canadian government can award. The Canadian equivalent of being knighted in the United Kingdom.
He may not have been Prime Minister or made reforms to our Charter, but John Matheson was the father of just a few things that all Canadians know, and that from the image of Canada that we have today.
This has been your lord and master, Matheson; stay classy, my heathens.
